Blaž Lukan is the Selector of the 59th Maribor Theater Festival Competition Programme

Following a positive opinion of the expert group, Artistic Director Aleš Novak has appointed dramaturge and theatre critic Blaž Lukan as the selector of the 59th Maribor Theatre Festival. 

The new selection period starts on 1 January 2023 and will end at the end of the calendar year on 31 December 2023.

Blaž Lukan (born 1955 in Ptuj) is a professor, dramaturge, theatre critic and poet. He graduated and received his Ph.D. in dramaturgy at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (UL AGRFT), where he also teaches. He works in theatre and film as a dramaturg (more than 60 dramaturgies), writes theatre criticism and accompanying texts to plays and professional texts by both Slovenian and foreign authors, as well as debates in the field of drama and the theory of the performing arts. From 2007 to 2011 and since 2017 he has been the Head of the Department of Dramaturgy and Performing Arts at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television of the University of Ljubljana. Since 2008 he has been a member of the editorial board of Amfiteater magazine, and until 2010 he was a member of the editorial board of Maska magazine. He was the artistic director of the Glej Theatre in Ljubljana and the Slovenian People's Theatre in Celje, and a few years ago he was also a selector of the Maribor Theatre Festival and the International Festival of Dolls. Furthermore, he has written radio plays and prose, is the author of the play Mrtvi (staged by the Slovene National Theatre Maribor, 1999/2000), which was nominated for the Grum Award in 2001, and a number of adaptations and dramatizations (e.g. Drejček in trije Marsovčki, Boljše življenje, Abadon, Zverinice iz Rezije). He is also a prolific writer of poetry, and has published ten collections of poetry. His poems for children, collected in the book Fantek in punčka, won the Levstik Prize for Original Fiction 2021.
