Since antiquity, the myth of Antigone, this upright and courageous rebel, has addressed in ever new forms the fundamental question of the conflict between the unwritten human laws and the codified laws of the state, questioning the functioning of society and the individual's place within it. This is the position from which Dominik Smole looked at the ancient myth: Through the story of the time after the end of a devastating war, he writes a modern tragedy about the disintegration of all ethics and law, and above all about the moral disintegration of modern society and man. Smole’s Antigone no longer rebels against an authoritarian ruler, but follows her conscience, a system of values in which she firmly and uncompromisingly believes. Her guiding principle is not conflict, confrontation, but a firm backbone in the pursuit of ideals; her absence as a metaphor for social and political pragmatism, opportunism and apathy addresses the moment that is now.
Director
Luka Marcen (Celje, 1995) is one of the most prominent representatives of the youngest generation of Slovenian theatre directors, known for his stagings that reflect contemporary issues and take clear socio-political and ethical stance, who works on the largest Slovenian stages in Ljubljana, Maribor, Nova Gorica and Celje, and has already received several awards for his productions.
Producer
The Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica is heir of Primorsko dramsko gledališče Nova Gorica, founded in 1969. In 1994, a new theatre building was built, in 2011 a small stage was added. In 2004 the theatre took its present name, was declared an institution of national importance.
