Möderndorfer Theatre, published by Slovenian Theatre Institute and Forum Ljubljana, is an exceptional work. In it, the author Vinko Möderndorfer details the 106 productions he conceived as a director in over four decades of his theatre work, from his first direction in Glej Experimental Theatre in 1980 until the baptismal production of the opera Unicorn in 2021.

Möderndorfer’s writings are diverse – from his thoughts on characteristics and stage rules of particular genres or types of theatre, through play analyses and notes about the emergence and growth of theatres, to very personal sketches about his collaborators (actors, playwrights, composers, costume and set designers, dramaturgs, artistic directors, photographers and others) and memories and moments from rehearsals and theatre anecdotes.

These writings are illustrated by nearly 1,500 photos and other visual materials. The book – designed by Edi Berk – is thus important as a piece of theatre history and as insight into the magic of theatre. The author knows how to interestingly and understandably phrase specialised expert topics. At the same time, he offers his readers a backstage peek into the miracle (and effort) of creating a production.
