Gogol's short story, Diary of a Madman, is considered one of the first detailed records of schizophreny, even before it was officially recognized by the medicine. Story does not analyze the disease in a medical sense, but rather questions the world in which an individual tries to come to terms with his identity and social status. Through Popriščin's disease, Gogol writes about the illness of society and reminds us that we are all in some sort of conflict with reality. Which
reality is more real? The one we read about in newspapers, the one we observe, or the one we carry in ourselves? In psychedelic monodrama, the director and composer Marjan Nećak bring the protagonist to the edge of insanity, only a step away from the abyss from which there is no return. A mysterious and deep multimedia chamber spectacle that merges between the musical monodrama and the opera. Ozren Grabarić, who recieved many awards for his acting work (the latest being added on this year's
Viminacium Fest), gives an excellent performance.
